PRACTICAL HOMESCHOOLING

WHAT IS PRACTICAL HOMESCHOOLING?

To start with let's look at the meaning of the word "practical". The Oxford Dictionary tells us that practical means, "1. available and useful habitual action, 2. action as oppose to theory". To us as a family, practical homeschooling means taking everyday events and, using all 5 senses, turning them into a learning experience. We have a curriculum that we follow. This gives us our goal for the year.

An example of PRACTICAL HOMESCHOOLING for this year will be that our daughter needs to learn about farming. This means the history of farming from 150 years ago until today. We've taken books out of the library and downloaded online homeschool resources, all to do with farming. Now, I'm sure she will have forgotten all of this within a short space of time if we didn't use Practical Homeschooling techniques.

What won't be forgotten is the PRACTICAL HOMESCHOOLING we did about farming. We studied an organic farm based on permaculture principles. We then drew up a plan for a vegetable garden of our own. Then we farmed in our garden. On a piece of ground the size of a door. If we didn't have a garden I would have used outdoor pots. We composted, planted seeds, watered, fed, harvested and finally took our produce to market (our friends and neighbours).

A follow on subject that needed teaching was the production cycle of wheat. Being from the planting of the wheat seed, to the making of bread. Again we used books and online homeschool resources. Then we used PRACTICAL HOMESCHOOL techniques. We did BAKERS DAY. While we were baking, we spoke about the flour that was being used, where, it came from and the many uses for it.

Baking is a wonderful example of PRACTICAL HOMESCHOOLING. While we bake we improve our reading skills by reading the recipe and labels of ingredients. We also improve our maths skills, as we weigh and measure. We also learn that different people use different ways to measure and weigh, being grams and ounces, etc.

PRACTICAL HOMESCHOOLING is about using all 5 of your child's senses. Taking everyday events and turning them into a learning experience.

It doesn't matter which curriculum you're using. How you teach it is up to you. Using Practical Homeschooling Techniques makes so much sense. Your child will not only learn using the logical part of their brain. They'll use all of their senses and in this way information is absorbed completely. You will find that your time spent repeating lessons will get less and less.

Practical Homeschooling leaves your child wishing for more at the end of each lesson. This is what you're looking for. This is how you want your child to feel about learning. Excited and stimulated! This is what you'll achieve by
