PROS AND CONS OF HOMESCHOOLING
PROS AND CONS OF HOMESCHOOLING
SPECIAL REPORT
Many articles have been written on the PROS AND CONS OF HOMESCHOOLING. I hope to give you an honest view in this SPECIAL REPORT. Yes, I want to see as many children Homeschooled as possible. But this can only happen if the parents are well informed, and understand the challenges, as well as the rewards, that they'll experience if they Homeschool.
The PROS AND CONS OF HOMESCHOOLING discussed below, are my personal opinion and are based both on my experience as a Homeschool Mom and my experience as a Private School Mom. Remember that everything in life is a perspective, what I see as a negative, may be what you see as a positive. How you deal with each issue is entirely up to you.
THE "CON'S" OF HOMESCHOOLING
"UNEDUCATED" PARENTS
This is a tricky one and often used by the "Homeschool is evil bunch". You'll hear people say. "How can you teach your child if you're not a teacher?" In a way they have a point, as a Homeschool Mom, and not a teacher, I often only have a limited prior knowledge of the subject I'm teaching. But I still can't see this as a negative. I have no preconceived ideas, no likes or dislikes for a specific subject.
To turn this from a "Con" to a "Pro", I make sure that I thoroughly research every angle of each subject before I teach our kids. I use both books from the library and online resources. The internet is a fantastic tool in lesson preparation. My kids are then guaranteed of an up to date view on their subjects, not old information that was taught in College 10 years ago!
And a very important point here. I'm not a "teacher?" Then how come I taught my kids, how to eat with a knife and fork, how to not touch dangerous things. How did their vocabulary go from "Mama", to "please can I have a drink?" Last time I looked I taught them this! We are all teachers, and all students. We never stop teaching others, and learning from them.
TIME CONSUMING
Homeschooling is time consuming, it certainly takes less time to drop your kids off at Public School.RESPONSIBILTY
Homeschooling is a huge responsibility. If your child doesn't get what he needs, or doesn't do "well" there is no one else to blame.
SOCIAL CONTACT
If you are the type of person that doesn't enjoy social contact then you'll have a challenge on your hands. Your children cannot stay at home all the time. You need to take control of their socialisation, by arranging that they join extra-curricular group activities, anything they enjoy from chess to ballet. You need to arrange play dates.
Now most Mom's I know work, so what play dates mean for us is having kids to play at our house virtually every time. This happens for us at least 3 or 4 afternoons a week at the moment. I love it, I'd have 20 children move in with us permanently given half a chance, so I have no problem. But if you don't enjoy having kids underfoot, Homeschool may not be for you.AGGRESSIVE PUBLIC SCHOOL PARENTS
When I started Homeschooling, I was stunned by the amount of aggression that was dished out to us. Who did we think we were, Homeschooling our children? We were going to ruin them? We had no right to Homeschool them! One person even had the audacity to say that people Homeschool to hide long term abuse! And so it went on.
Children my kids had played with at their public school, who had been in and out of our house, for 2 or 3 years, stopped coming. I couldn't get their Mothers to return my calls. And so we made new friends. But you need to develop a thick skin, and know why you're Homeschooling. People will ask you. Me, I come back at them like a wildfire! Don't tell me I'm doing the wrong thing by Homeschooling. All "independent" research shows me that Homeschooling is the ONLY way. More importantly it's my choice. Remember no-one has the right to inflict their belief system on you. You love your children as much as I love mine. We would never do anything to damage our children! Most important if we Homeschool we know what our kids are being exposed to!
NOW THE "PRO'S"
CONTROL OF THE CURRICULUM
You know what your child is learning everyday. You know your child is being taught your belief system and your moral code. You know your child is being taught an age appropriate curriculum. Exposing a child to certain subjects too early will lead to major psychological problems at a later stage. Often damage that is irreversible.SAFE FROM ABUSE
You know that they are safe and not being bullied or abused in some other way. You know they're not becoming a part of the cycle of violence.RESPECT AND CARE
You know that they are being respected and cared for. You know that they are being given what is needed to become an adult that is whole. By which I mean strong academically, spiritually, emotionally and physically.FAMILY BONDING
The joy you'll feel as you and your children set out on your Homeschool Journey together is indescribable. The way you'll witness your family drawing closer and loving each others company, will often bring tears to your eyes. It does to mine. This is the way family is supposed to be.If you weigh up the PROS AND CONS OF HOMESCHOOLING, I hope you'll find as we have that the path ahead is quite clear to you.
